Nigeria vs Rwanda

Nigeria Super Eagles step into Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Rwanda knowing only victory will keep their hopes alive in Group C. With just seven points from six matches, the Super Eagles are treading on thin ice.

South Africa sit comfortably at the top with 16 points, while Rwanda and Benin have eight apiece. Anything short of three points in Uyo would be catastrophic for Eric Chelle’s men, especially with a daunting trip to South Africa coming three days later.

The mood around the Super Eagles camp is one of urgency and silent optimism. Since the 2026 qualification campaign began, Nigeria have managed just one win, away to Rwanda in March, while squandering opportunities in draws against Zimbabwe, Lesotho, and South Africa, before falling 2-1 to Benin.

That patchy run explains why Chelle, who took charge in January 2025, and his boys are under immense pressure.

Head-to-head history: Nigeria’s Super Eagles vs Rwanda

Nigeria have dominated this fixture on paper, winning three of their eight meetings with Rwanda and losing just once.

But that single defeat still lingers: a 2-1 home loss last November in AFCON qualifiers, when Augustine Eguavoen’s makeshift side collapsed in Uyo.

Chelle’s team responded earlier this year with a 2-0 win in Kigali, thanks to a Victor Osimhen brace, but Saturday’s clash carries heavier weight. This time, World Cup qualification is on the line.

Team news

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is back fit after a minor scare at his club, and he should retain his starting spot.

Semi Ajayi is ruled out, opening the door for Chidozie Awaziem, who returned to Europe this summer to join FC Nantes.

However, young Benjamin Fredrick, outstanding at the Unity Cup, has reportedly impressed Chelle enough to be in contention for a competitive debut.

Calvin Bassey has reverted to left-back duties for Fulham this season, and Chelle is likely to mirror that role, restoring balance to the back four.

In midfield, Chelle faces selection headaches, with Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Frank Onyeka, Raphael Onyedika, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, and Christantus Uche all pushing for starts. The lack of a settled partnership has been one of Nigeria’s biggest problems.

In attack, all eyes remain on Victor Osimhen. The Galatasaray forward has scored three of Nigeria’s last four goals in the qualifiers and would be the key man for Chelle again.

But his strike partner is uncertain. Cyriel Dessers, who scored twice in his last three games for Rangers, is in the mix, while Tolu Arokodare and Uche provide alternatives.

On the flanks, Ademola Lookman’s club standoff may cost him a starting berth, leaving Moses Simon, revitalised at Paris FC with goals and assists already this season, as the likely starter.

Samuel Chukwueze, who finally switched Milan for Fulham a few days ago, offers width on the right.

Rwanda’s tactical puzzle

Rwanda boss Adel Amrouche is known for pragmatic setups. His 4-2-3-1 often morphs into a 5-4-1 against stronger sides, prioritising defensive shape and quick counter-attacks.

Fiacre Ntwari is expected in goal, while Ange Mutsinzi and Thierry Manzi marshal the central defence. Skipper Djihad Bizimana anchors midfield, and his experience will be crucial in resisting Nigeria’s press.

How will they set up?

Nigeria possible lineup (4-4-2 diamond):

Nwabali; Aina, Troost-Ekong, Fredrick, Bassey; Ndidi, Iwobi, Chukwueze, Simon; Dessers, Osimhen.

Rwanda possible lineup (5-4-1):

Ntwari; Niyomugabo, Manzi, Mutsinzi, Ngwabije, Omborenga; Mugisha, Niyigena, Hamon, Bizimana; Kagere

What’s at stake?

Nigeria’s qualification campaign is hanging by a thread. With South Africa pulling away, Rwanda and Benin matching strides, and Zimbabwe still lurking, the Super Eagles can ill afford another slip.

A draw at home would keep them stuck in mid-table and pile unbearable pressure ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Bloemfontein. A defeat would effectively end their campaign.

Chelle, who has tried to inject discipline and structure since taking over, will be judged by these two games. His side must show resilience, fluidity in midfield, and sharper finishing up front. Above all, Nigeria need Osimhen at his most ruthless.

For Rwanda, the aim is simpler: survive the early onslaught, frustrate the Super Eagles, and snatch a result on the break. Their 2-1 win in Uyo last year proves it can be done.

Prediction

Nigeria have struggled for fluency in this qualifying campaign, but Osimhen’s presence and the availability of key players like Simon and Nwabali should tip the scales.

Expect Rwanda to sit deep and frustrate, but the Super Eagles should find a way through, especially if Simon and Chukwueze provide quality from wide areas.
