Nigeria and Senegal will meet for the first time in the history of the African Nations Championship as the Super Eagles begin their quest for a historic title against the defending champions in their Group D opener at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar.

For Nigeria, it is a long-awaited return to the competition after missing the last two editions, and for Senegal, it is the start of a title defence that could cement their name in the history of the competition as the second team to retain the title after Morocco.

Senegal lifted their maiden CHAN crown in 2022, defeating hosts Algeria in a dramatic penalty shootout after a goalless draw.

They now arrive at the eighth edition, holding in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda with a 10-match unbeaten record in regulation time against West African opposition in the competition, including two notable victories over Ivory Coast and Mauritania in their last title-winning run.

The Teranga Lions have built a reputation for being defensively resolute, keeping 10 clean sheets in 14 CHAN matches since their debut. They have recorded five 1–0 victories in that span and conceded only two goals in their last seven matches at the tournament.

Senegal’s last defeat in the group stage of the CHAN came in 2011 against Rwanda, after which they recorded opening-day wins in their next two campaigns, beating Tanzania 1–0 in 2009 and Ivory Coast by the same scoreline in 2022.

In contrast, Nigeria are regarded as one of the most attack-minded teams in CHAN history, with 25 goals scored in 15 matches and an average of 1.67 goals per game.

The Super Eagles B famously finished third in 2014 and reached the final in 2018, losing to Morocco.

Their best group stage performance came in 2014 when, after losing their opener to Mali, they bounced back to beat Mozambique 4–2 and South Africa 3–1 before advancing to the last four.

Their most emphatic win was a 4–1 thrashing of Niger in 2016, although that edition ended prematurely for Nigeria at the group stage.

Despite their offensive prowess, Nigeria’s record in opening matches has been inconsistent. In four tournament appearances, they have won just once on match-day one, 2–0 against Tunisia in 2018, while drawing once and losing twice.

Notably, both times Nigeria failed to win their group opener but still advanced to the knockout stage, they went on to reach the semi-final or beyond.

Both sides qualified for this year’s finals through the WAFU Zone B qualifiers. Senegal defeated Liberia 4–1 on aggregate to book their ticket to Ivory Coast, while Nigeria came through a nervy tie against Ghana, grabbing a 3–1 aggregate win after a goalless first leg in Cape Coast.

Statistically, Nigeria’s CHAN fixtures tend to produce more goals, with an average of 2.8 goals per game, while Senegal’s matches average fewer than 1.5 goals.

This contrast underlines the tactical divergence expected in Tuesday’s battle, with Nigeria likely to prioritise ball progression and attacking interplay, while Senegal will aim to control space, frustrate the opposition and capitalise on transitions.

This will be the first time Nigeria face a reigning CHAN champion since the 2018 final, when they suffered a 4–0 defeat to Morocco, and a positive result against Senegal would not only boost their confidence but potentially signal a changing of the guard in West African football.

Meanwhile, Senegal are seeking to extend their unbeaten streak in regulation time at the CHAN to 11 matches and continue their defensive dominance.
